- In life we contract and guard
ourself as a protective mechanism, particularly in
response to stress, which has an emotional as well as a
physical dimension to it ... this contraction leads to
stiffness ... to postural patterns of 'holding on
tight'... and over time our body forgets how to return to
being in a relaxed state.
- Nowadays there is substantial
research validating the connections between prolonged
stress and ill health leading to a range of health
problems, impaired immune function and high blood
pressure to name a couple.
- There are many Bodywork Modalities
which are helpful in in supporting and assisting us/our
bodies to experience relaxation, to release patterns of
holding and contraction to enable our bodies to
self-correct and to heal.
- The following is a list of few
modalities that I practice and that I have found to be
beneficial for myself and for my clients. I have included
one or two links to relevant books for each modality...to

- Ortho-Bionomy
ortho=to straighten, bio=life,
onomy=laws pertaining to
Ortho-Bionomy is a form of bodywork, a
complete system of natural self-corrective healing developed
by Dr Arthur Pauls. The techniques are very safe since
movements are made slowly, following the spontaneous
preferencesof the body.
There are no painful contortions or
forced adjustments. Using these techniques the body is led
back through the movements which created the problem to undo
the damage under safe and gentle circumstances.
Another way of explaining these
techniques is that the body is moved into what is it's
preferred or more comfortable position and then this
position is exaggerated by adding gentle compression into
the joint.
This compression triggers the
proprioceptive nervous system, which when activated sends
information relating to the position in space and the
particular holding pattern of that part of the body to the
brain.
When the part of the brain involved in
this process recognises this holding pattern it instigates
self corrective changes in the muscles and other tissues to
occur, allowing for a return to a more normal alignment of
that part of the body.
Perhaps Kain (1992) says it more
clearly:
In Ortho-Bionomy, we use this proprioceptive communication system as a way of
communicating with the body through direct neurological information. Moving the
affected joint stimulates the proprioceptors, effectively sending the signal:
"hey, pay attention here". Once a release position is found, compression (pushing
gently into the joint) is usually applied. Compression is another way the
proprioceptors are stimulated, so and even clearer message is set:
"hey, notice THIS".
Now we have combined muscular and neurological information available to the body
about how the body is experiencing itself at this moment. In Ortho-Bionomy, the focus
is on finding a release position that creates comfort, so that the body notices how to be
comfortable. Once the body is comfortable, it relaxes. When it relaxes, as with the
wires in the tent pole example, the natural, inherent harmony of the physical structure
can reassert itself. (p.7) Ortho-Bionomy is a form of bodywork, a complete system of
natural self-corrective healing developed by Dr Arthur Pauls.
Yet, for all the gentleness of
Ortho-Bionomy, sometimes only two or three sessions are
needed to release pain and unblock energies, allowing the
body to function normally again.
Ortho-Bionomy has been found to be
useful for arthritis, muscular pain, whiplash, sports
injury, scoliosis, emotional stress and occupational
tension,

Therapeutic
Touch
- Therapeutic Touch is an
energy based modality developed by Dolores
Krieger and Dora Kunz. It involves the
Practitioner to use their hands to assess the
person's energy field and the re-balancing of
this energy field where there is weakess or
congestion.

Reiki
- Reiki is an energy based
healing modality. Practitioners use light hand
placments to channel healing energy to the
recipient. It is commonly used to treat
emotional and mental distress as well as chronic
and acute physical problems.

Ideokinesis
- Ideokinesis is the term
used to describe the process by which imagery
acts as a stimulus for developing kinesthetic
awareness and producing bodily change. It is
based on the work of Mabel Todd, a pioneer in
the field of postural education.
-
- Ideokinesis is having an
intellectual understanding of the design
principles of our body, the mechanics of
alignment, of the effects of gravity, of force
and counterforce and how this relates to posture
and movement and then being able to utililize
imagery or visualization to bring forth improved
balance, posture and movement.
-
- A wonderful book on this
subject is called 'Inside Motion' ... an
ideokinetic Basis for Movement Education by John
Rolland, published by Rolland String Research
Associates, Urbana, IL 61801, ISBN perfect bound
0-9651665-0-3 or spiral bound 0-651665-1-1.
Other authors worth exploring
are Lulu Sweigard (Human Movement Potential: Its
Ideokinetic Facilitation), Eric Franklin's Dynamic
Alignment Through Imagery or books by Mabel
Elsworth Todd, Irene Dowd, Pamela Matt or Barbara
Clark.

Bio-energetics
- Bio-energetics
espouse that repressed emotions and desires
affect the body and psyche by creating
chronic muscle tension with diminished
vitality and energy. Physical exercises,
breathing techniques and verbal psychotherapy
are utilized to attempt to free up this
'character armoring'.
